Oak City Social Club Sponsors and Captures the NCCCA Gala Night

The Umstead Hotel ballroom was already humming when we arrived. Student art lined the walls of the salon just outside, with each piece lit like it belonged in a gallery. A piano played softly in the corner — not a recording, but a student, calm and collected, setting the tone. Then came the choir. A full, rich harmony filled the entrance just as the guests began to arrive. It was clear: this wasn’t just another awards gala. This was a celebration with soul.

The North Carolina Community College Association had gathered to honor its own, and Oak City Social Club was invited to capture it all. Not just as photographers — this was our first time sponsoring an event of this kind, and seeing our logo printed on the welcome signage gave the whole night a new weight. We even donated a full branding session to the Student of the Year winner. That felt good.

Our assignment? Simple on paper. Capture the award winners as they take the stage, their speeches, their smiles, and the applause. But anyone who’s ever worked an event like this knows the real work happens in between the scheduled moments. It’s in the genuine connections during cocktail hour, the spontaneous laughs between colleagues, and the proud glances from a mentor in the audience. That’s where we aimed our lenses.

With nearly 300 guests in attendance, we rolled in as a three-person team, covering every angle without disrupting the flow. During the pre-event mingling, we weaved through the crowd to capture candids of attendees, honorees, and sponsors. Once the formal program began, we went into stealth mode. Silent shutters. Long lenses. Capturing the room from a discrete distance.
